About

Mona Lisa Deadpan

Artist Bio

Lisa Burns is a water media artist residing in rural Minnesota whose subject matter celebrates life in the upper Midwest. Lisa grew up as a farm girl near Downer, MN and often paints the landscapes, florals and animals that were a significant part of her childhood.
Lisa's work has been described as realistic/post-impressionistic and “having a calmness to it”. She is inspired by the post-impressionist artists that painted and sketched the everyday lives of ordinary people and feels that it is important to document the “common” and to connect with your audience.
When working in her studio, Lisa often combines a variety of water media on gessoed watercolor paper to create artwork that has a more “pastel-ish” look. Her Plein Air work differs from her more crafted studio works due to the limited timeframe to paint and looser brush strokes and has a more unrestricted quality to it.
Her primary mediums include watercolor, gouache, acrylic, watercolor pencil, and watercolor batik and prefers water-based mediums due to the more unpredictable nature of the material. Water-based media forces you to free yourself from perfectionism and to allow the paint to do the work.
Lisa has served in board and officer positions for Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artists (FMVA) and Red River Watercolor Society (RRWS) and holds current membership in Gallery 4, Red Door Art Gallery, Art of the Lakes (AOTL), Outdoor Painters of Minnesota (OPM), FMVA, and RRWS. She was a committee member of Arts for the Holidays and was instrumental in organizing the events in 2021 and 2022. Lisa has also participated in several local art exhibitions and has won several awards. In 2023, she was awarded FMVA Artist of the Year.
